Some yoga is going to make your back pain worse. There, I said it. The problem with quick-fix, Instagram, sound-byte yoga is that there is no nuance to it. And often no real thought to sequencing or body diversity.
Many of these poses pictured here can actually create back pain or make it worse. While there's no one-size-fits-all approach, there are some principles of practice to keep in mind and this "sequence" breaks many of those.
For a lot of folks, forward bends, especially seated forward bends are contraindicated--the load on the lumbar spine is the greatest in this position.
With back pain, oftentimes focusing on symmetrical poses can be more supportive. So many folks create instability in the SI joint by overdoing things like lunges and seated twists where, as my teacher likes to say, "using the arms like crow bars."
In order to sufficiently support our backs, whether it's to get out of pain or prevent pain, we need both stretching and strengthening. I don't see any poses in this sequence that address the strengthening component.
Images (and videos) like this are one of the reasons why I encourage my students to use caution when using social media or YouTube for yoga information. While there's a lot of great teachers and content out there, there's also a lot of downright dangerous stuff too. And no social media post will replace the value of a real-life well-trained teacher that knows you and your body.
