The Beliefs behind the Face

May 9, 2025 Jason Wilson
RWS owner Michelle Wilson at Jumbo Rocks Campground in Joshua Tree National Park

Hey there! It’s me, the face of this yoga + wellness practice!

Here’s a few things I want to share about the approach I take to my teachings, so you can know a little more about what to expect when you study with me, whether that’s in a weekly yoga class, a workshop, retreat or private session.

I believe yoga really is for everyone. And that’s not just about the words. It’s about backing that statement up with the training, expertise, creativity and willingness to create an inclusive classroom, regardless of age, ability, gender, class or race.

Part of an inclusive classroom means having multiple options available to every one in every single class. Using chairs, the walls, bolsters, blocks, and other props to find a sense of empowered ease in every posture. There is no hierarchy in yoga. Every.single.option is just as worthy as the next.

I believe (and know in my bones) that yoga has so much more to offer than the fitness-only model that we have been fed with modern capitalist yoga that focuses on the esthetics and only the musculoskeletal benefits. (And don’t get me wrong, these are wonderful “side effects” of the practice.)

Yoga is a time-tested ancient system. Yes, system. Which means that it’s more than the sum of its parts. Asana (postures) are only one-eighth of the full practice outlined by the sages. When we extract one piece of a system, we are missing the radical potential available to all of us as humans: freedom, connection, and a deep sense of peace, to name just a few of the rich benefits of a full yoga practice.

I believe in doing my best to walk my talk. I am a student first and expend a significant amount of my time and resources on my own daily practice. Studying the neuoroscience behind yoga (ethics + postures + breathwork + meditation) along with the ancient teachings lights me up and informs how I share yoga.

Trauma-informed care and trauma-healing are at the heart of every decision I make as a teacher. Because we all have had trauma in our lives, whether we realize it or not. What does this look like: I do not offer physical adjustments in class, choices are offered. Your sense of agency is paramount in navigating trauma. You are in charge of your body and how you practice. You can opt out or opt in to the offerings.

I too am growing and learning. I learn just as much from the amazing folks I share yoga with as they do from me--and probably more!

Whew, that ended up being a little more deep than I planned. I think it’s important to know the “why” behind the how, and the person sharing these teachings with you.

I’d love to hear what makes you tick. How has yoga informed and influenced your life? What would you like to see shift?

Peace, love and yoga,

Michelle
